Kukkarahalli Kare (lake) spread over (58 hectares) is located in the heart of Mysore city. It adjoins the University of Mysore, Kalamandir (and Rangyana), and the CFTRI campus (separated by the Hunsur Road). It once used to provide water supply to the city . At one time sewage, excessive land grabbing almost lead to the ruin of the lake, efforts are being made to preserve it both by the University of Mysore and the citizen forums of Mysore. Now hundreds of Mysoreans come to the lake for Morning/evening walk. There is a walking track around the lake covering a distance of 3.6 kms. It is also an excellent place for birders / nature lovers. More than 180 species of birds have been recorded around this lake and a good place for naturalists who want to document Butterflies/insects.
